The Hong Kong Society of Certified Insurance Practitioners Limited

On the advent of Hong Kong becoming the Special Administrative Region of China and at the same time feeling the need of having a body of insurance professionals in Hong Kong, a few fervent insurance professionals put their heads together to explore the possibility of incorporating a Hong Kong body of qualified insurance practitioners. With the support of the Insurance Commissioner, Mr. Alan Wong, JP, they formed among themselves a working group and met as frequently as necessary in a Causeway Bay restaurant ("Edward Lloyd" in action) to work out the formation of such a body with a view to enhancing professionalism in the insurance industry and the status of these professionals.
After many months' work, the efforts of the working group, assisted immensely by Deacons Graham & James as honorary legal advisers, eventually bore fruit. On 26th August, 1998, the Hong Kong Society of Certified Insurance Practitioners was incorporated.
The Society consists of 6 classes, namely, Associate, Fellow, Affiliate Member, Student Member, Founding Member and Honorary Member. The Executive Committee of the Society may invite dignitaries to serve as Honorary Advisers or Patrons to support the work of the Society. There are currently about one thousand five hundred insurance professionals in Hong Kong who have already obtained Chartered or Certified status from insurance bodies in the U.K., U.S.A., Australia and other countries. These persons are eligible for membership. The Society would welcome them as members assuming they have also five years of managerial experience after being qualified.
The objectives of the Society are clearly defined in the Memorandum and Articles of Association and are summarised in the Vision and Value statements. The Subscribers who were elected Executive Committee members are proud of establishing a professional body of OUR OWN (of Hong Kong and for Hong Kong) and are desirous of making insurance an even more respectable profession in Hong Kong.
